Norwood Stage 1
Norwood Stage 1 describes a hairline and crown with no significant recession or thinning — the baseline most people start from before any pattern hair loss develops. If you've landed on this page, it's usually for one of two reasons: you're comparing your own hairline against the scale out of curiosity or early concern (often prompted by a father or brother's hair loss), or you have a naturally higher or uneven hairline you'd like refined even though you aren't experiencing loss.
Why the range is 500-1,500 grafts
Most Stage 1 patients aren't surgical candidates — there's no bald or thinning area to fill, and operating on a stable hairline ahead of any real loss risks a result that looks unnatural if recession does eventually progress around it. The 500-1,500 graft range shown here applies specifically to hairline-lowering or density-refinement work on an already-stable hairline, not to treating hair loss, since there isn't any yet at this stage. A dermatologist can check for early miniaturization (thinning follicles too subtle to see with the naked eye) that sometimes precedes visible Stage 2 recession by a year or more.
What to expect
If there's a genuine, stable cosmetic concern (a high or asymmetric hairline unrelated to hair loss), this is usually a single, small session.
