Only hair in the "safe donor zone" — the horseshoe-shaped band on the back and sides of the scalp — is genetically resistant to the hormone (DHT) that causes pattern hair loss. That band contains a fixed number of follicles. Every graft moved from it is gone from that area for good, which is why over-harvesting early can leave nothing in reserve for a touch-up years later.
A single session is capped at roughly 3,500–4,500 grafts regardless of total supply, limited by extraction time and how long grafts can safely stay outside the body. Your lifetime reserve is usually larger — it's the total budget to spend across however many future sessions you may need, not a number to extract all at once.
If your photos show signs of thinning within the donor band itself, or scarring from a prior procedure, the estimate will be deliberately more conservative and the tool will flag it. Some patients have diffuse thinning that reaches even the "safe" zone, meaning it isn't as permanent as it looks — this is exactly the kind of finding that needs an in-person trichoscopy before any harvesting plan is finalized.
